Ledger Start — Begin Securely with Ledger.com/Start

Quick Start — 7 clear steps

The onboarding below is designed so you keep full control of your keys. Each step is short, actionable, and includes safety checks to avoid common mistakes.

1. Download Ledger Live
Go to ledger.com/start and download Ledger Live for your OS. Always verify the domain and checksum on the official site.
2. Unbox & inspect
Check packaging seals and included accessories. Only use the cables provided or trusted replacements.
3. Initialize device
Power on the Ledger, choose "Set up as new device" on the device menu, and create a PIN. Never use obvious PINs like 1234 or birthdays.
4. Write your recovery phrase
The device will generate a 24-word recovery phrase. Write it on the supplied sheet; store it offline in a safe place. Never photograph or type it into a website.
5. Install apps & add accounts
Use Ledger Live's Manager to install coin apps and add accounts. Approve installations on-device when prompted.
6. Test with a small transaction
Send a small amount from an exchange or another wallet to verify account addresses and flow before larger transfers.
7. Maintain & update
Keep Ledger Live and device firmware updated, and read official release notes before updating firmware.

Troubleshooting highlights

Common issues are usually fixable with a few checks. If unsure, always consult ledger.com/support.

  1. Device not found: try a different cable or USB port and enable USB configuration on mobile.
  2. PIN attempts exhausted: entering the wrong PIN multiple times can wipe the device — use your recovery phrase to restore.
  3. Missing balance: add the correct account and refresh; some chains may require specific derivation paths.

FAQ — Ledger.com/Start

Where do I download the app?

From ledger.com/start. Choose the correct platform and verify the download through official checks provided on the site.

Can I restore on another hardware wallet?

Yes — a recovery phrase follows BIP39/BIP44 standards; it can be restored on compatible wallets. Be careful: exposing the phrase increases risk.

Is a passphrase necessary?

A passphrase provides an extra layer (creating a hidden wallet). Use it only if you understand backup and recovery implications — if you lose the passphrase, access to that hidden wallet is lost permanently.
